Junk Mail & Spam Q & A

Hevanet Spamhater Club - Filter your e-mail for spam before you download.
Outlook Express Spam Filter - How to set one up.
Eudora Spam Filter - How to set one up.

Q. I keep getting all this "Junk Mail" in my mailbox! Isn't there something you can do to stop it?
A. Unfortunately, Junk Mail and Spam are becoming a fact of life on the Internet. We do not sell or give out our member information or e-mail address to anyone. However, it seems like when one junk e-mailer gets your e-mail address, it does not take long before it is in that hands of every junk e-mailer out there. There are several things you can do to manage the unsolicited mail you receive. The first and most important caution is to be very careful in giving out your Hevanet e-mail address. Many web sites ask for an e-mail address to register with their services. Unless you totally trust the site, we recommend you do not use your Hevanet e-mail address. Get one of the many free e-mail services like Hotmail or Yahoo Mail and use that for your online registrations. Keep your Hevanet e-mail address just for friends and family.

Q. Can't you just "block" all the mail from Junk Mail sites?
A. While it may be possible to block all mail from a particular domain, it is not desirable to do so. There is the chance that some legitimate mail may originate from the domain. You would not want important mail addressed to you to be blocked by mistake. We now have a opt-in filter service. See the link above.

Q. What can I do?
A. There are several steps you can take. The first and easiest is to simply "delete" the mail without even reading it. You can tell most Junk Mail by the subject line.

Q. That's a lot of trouble! Anything else?
A. Some Email programs have the ability to "filter" your mail. In other words, you could set your program to automatically send all mail from the address' you specify to your "trash" folder. Microsoft Outlook Express, Netscape Communicator, Pegasus Mail and Eudora Pro have this capability. There are also many others. See the links above and below this article.

Q. How can I get off these mailing lists?
A. This is sometimes difficult. The return address is often forged on Junk Mail. Responsible mass-mailers usually give you a way to remove yourself from a list, but this is not always the case. In fact, if you do reply with a remove request, this just confirms your valid email address and often causes you to get even more junk mail! Sometimes you can examine the complete Headers of the mail message and see if you can get a valid address to reply to and complain.

Q. Anything else I can do?
A. As a last resort, we can offer to change your username/e-mail address. This would give you a fresh start and instantly stop all junk mail. The drawback is that you must inform all your contacts of your new address.

Q. I've joined the Spamhater Club and tried making filters, but I still get tons of spam!
A. You may be confusing true spam and ordinary commercial email. True spam is totally unsolicited, frequently does not have your address in the TO field, has a false return address and rarely has a legitimate way to un-subscribe. They frequently ask you to call a phone number to contact them. Mortgage quotes, get rich quick schemes, porn sites and body part enlargement emails are examples of true spam. These types of junk mailers frequently "guess" at email names and flood ISPs with junk mail, hoping a percentage will get through. They don't care about the emails that don't.

Commercial email, on the other hand, comes from places like specialmailoffers.com, topica.com, homesavingsplace.com and etracks.com. These emails usually are addressed directly to you. This means that they probably got your address from a website where you may have signed up for some offer or other information. In the small print, there is usually a statement that says they may share your address with their partners and affiliates. Thus, you end up getting a variety of commercial offers. It is much like when you buy something from a mail order catalogue. Suddenly, you start getting catalogues in the mail from other companies. Most commercial emails have a legitimate way to un-subscribe. Look at the bottom of the email for details. Most will honor your removal request.
