Club Update

I have lots of good news to report about Hoodview's endeavors the last few months. On July 31st the Douglas Ridge Rifle Club put on a very successful youth day with 64 kids participating. Hoodview volunteers helped out in several of the disciplines and Craig Schirle and the lunch crew fed 175 people in all. It was a day that will make a lasting impression on all of the kids involved and kudos are in order for Larry and Anna Warren as well as all of the volunteers for making it such a success.
In August, Nick Myatt the ODFW's Access and Habitat Coordinator was our chapter meeting speaker. He shared information about the program with us, detailing the Public Lands Access Project, the Upland Cooperative Access Program, as well as the A&H Grant Program and the A&H Tag Raffles and Auctions. He finished up by fielding our questions and left us with a better insight into the A&H Program as a whole. The chapter picnic at Portland Gun Club was not very well attended, but everyone that braved the unusual bad weather had fun breaking clay targets and were treated to another great Craig Schirle meal. By the way, Craig won all the games that day so he has bragging rights until we try to unseat him next year!
September was Hunter Safety Awareness month and Hunter Education instructors Larry and Anna Warren put on a great presentation for the chapter meeting. We also had Sargent Chris Allori from the Oregon State Police present to give us some updates on recent regulation changes and the Turn in Poacher Program. He fielded many questions ranging from carrying firearms in vehicles to trespassing issues to bones and hide disposal. After the presentations we drew a winner for the "Black Powder Lovers" raffle. I believe we had the name of the raffle correct because Hoodview member and black powder enthusiast Bill Gavin was the lucky winner!
Hunting seasons are in full swing and again I would like to urge you to lead by example this fall by utilizing safe and ethical hunting practices. Please share some of your knowledge and experience with a new hunter and help the next generation of Oregon hunters get started. Have a safe and productive hunt and I look forward to seeing you at a chapter meeting soon.

Hunters against Hunger

It's time again for Oregon Hunters to help provide nutritious meat for those in need. Perhaps you need to make some room in your freezer for this year's bounty or have harvested more game than your family needs. If so, we are encouraging you to make a small donation of a few pounds of professionally prepared meat to the Hunters Against Hunger program. If you have questions about the Hunters against Hunger program, need to drop off a donation or would like to have your donation picked up please contact coordinator Gerry Rondo @ 503-761-2359

VOTE!

November 2nd is Election Day and there are many critical decisions before us. I urge everyone to take the time to research all of the candidates and issues thoroughly before making a decision. Candidates say many things during a campaign and issues often become clouded, but their past performance, voting records and the money trail provide insight into what they are really about. The outcome of this election will certainly impact sportsmen for some time to come, so be sure that the sportsmen impact this election!

Get out and vote!

Attention Young Guns

A total eclipse of the full moon happens on Wednesday evening, October 27, when the sun, earth, and moon align and the moon moves through the earth's shadow and grows dark. Anyone in North America will be able to see the eclipse, weather permitting. It begins at moonrise  (6pm) for Pacific NW observers, with maximum eclipse occurring at a very convenient 8pm. This eclipse is total, and the moon will darken substantially about two hours after it rises. It is not necessary to use a telescope to view the eclipse, although binoculars or a low-power telescope will enhance the color. The moon will appear reddened, and this reddish color comes from sunlight that is refracted around the edge of the earth and onto the moon and from dust in set atmosphere.

Monthly Membership Drawing

The general membership winner for August was Thomas Juhr of Boring and for September, David Young of NE Portland was drawn. Neither were present at the meeting but they would have taken home $100 Cash if they had been. Better luck next time guys! We'll draw another member's name and try to give the $100 away again this month. You might be the lucky one drawn, but will you be there to collect? Good luck to all and remember you must be present to win!

Hoodview's Antler Points

January 2004 - Hoodview donated $240 to the ODFW Becoming an Outdoors Woman program. The money will be used to provide scholarships to attendees of the BOW program.

January 2004 - Hoodview donated $500 to support the aerial gunning of coyotes on private land in NE Oregon.

February 2004 - Hoodview donated $225 to the Clackamas County ODFW Hunter Education program. The money was used to purchase three Savage single shot .22 rifles for firearms training.

March 2004 - Hoodview Awarded OHA Grant

This spring the Hoodview Chapter applied to the OHA State Board for a grant to support our youth shooting program. The Youth Education and Shooting Skills Opportunities (YESSO) grant requested money to purchase youth shotguns, ear and eye protection, gun cases and related supplies to be used at Hoodview Chapter events that involve youth or family shooting opportunities. The OHA State Board approved our request and granted $3000 to make the capitol purchases for our program. Sportsman's Warehouse gave us a great deal on Remington youth shotguns and we're currently working with other vendors to get the most that we can out of the remaining funds. Soon you'll see the YESSO shotguns at our Youth Day, the chapter work party, the sporting clays picnic and anywhere else we go where shooting is safe and appropriate!

The Clackamas County Community Environment and Forest Programs, the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management have joined forces to track down and prosecute illegal dumpers on public forest lands. The project, called "Dump Stoppers," is funded by a federal grant to deter illegal dumping and vandalism on U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and Clackamas County owned forest lands within the County. The partnership also includes: private timberland owned by Longview Fibre, Port Blakely, and Weyerhaeuser, which is adjacent to federal lands; the Oregon Department of Forestry; Portland General Electric; and Oregon Trail School District-Sandy High School Forestry Program.

Hoodview Rewards Participation!

This year, in addition to our general membership raffle, everyone present at our chapter meetings will be given a Special Raffle ticket. Additionally, everyone that volunteers at any Hoodview event will also be given a Special Raffle ticket. The Special Raffle will be held at next year's Christmas dinner and the first place prize will be a center-fire rifle! The only catch is that you have to be a current OHA Hoodview Chapter member at the time of the drawing to win. Are you coming to the meeting this month to get your ticket?
