Here is the summary of my morning dogwalks from NW Seblar Terrace to the Pittock Mansion for the week 1/17 to 1/23/02. Species in ALL CAPS were neither seen nor heard the previous week. We did the walk 5 days this week. Species # days found (peak #, date) GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL 1 (1, 1/18) Gull sp (GWGU?) 1 (3, 1/18) Anna's Hummingbird 2 (2, 1/17) Downy Woodpecker 3 (2, 1/17) Hairy Woodpecker 1 (1, 1/17) Northern Flicker 4 (2, 1/23) Steller's Jay 5 (8, 1/19) Western Scrub-Jay 1 (1, 1/23) American Crow 3 (2, 1/17) Varied Thrush 5 (15, 1/19) American Robin 4 (20, 1/19) European Starling 2 (4, 1/19) Red-breasted Nuthatch 5 (10, 1/19) Brown Creeper 1 (2, 1/23) Bewick's Wren 3 (1) Winter Wren 2 (2, 1/17) Bushtit 2 (30, 1/17) Ruby-crowned Kinglet 2 (2, 1/17) Golden-crowned Kinglet 4 (8) Black-capped Chickadee 5 (40, 1/17) Chestnut-backed Chickadee 4 (20, 1/17) Pine Siskin 4 (70, 1/19) House Finch 5 (30, 1/19) Red Crossbill 1 (1, 1/19) Fox Sparrow 1 (1, 1/19) Song Sparrow 5 (32 [see note], 1/17) Dark-eyed Junco 5 (40, 1/19) Spotted Towhee 5 (8, 1/19) note: Evidently, I have been undercounting Song Sparrows. My estimates for each species each day are made immediately at the end of the walk. This works OK for species that occur infrequently or in flocks, but not for birds that are common and uniformly distributed, such as Song Sparrows. On 1/17, a day when I would have estimated 15-20 Song Sparrows, I did a careful tally and totaled 32--implying that I have been undercounting by a factor of 2 up to now. Will try to do better in the future! Wink Gross Portland
