I will sing to the Lord all my life ... [Psalm 104] Naked pride Once again, First United Methodist Church of Portland, Oregon flew its banner in the annual Pride parade June 24, 2001 -- just one of many events for the congregation's GLBT members and friends this summer in Stumptown. More than two dozen First UMC folk participated in the annual crawl ... er ... parade through downtown Portland. Plans are already under way for next year's parade entry. (Pablogram to Pride organizers: Please try to find another day than Father's Day.) As ever, Worldwide Pablo was on hand to inspire fellow Methodists and greet his legions of literally two or three admirers. (Contrary to appearances, WWP does not know everyone in Portland, biblically or otherwise.) News flash: "Queer beer" beats out coffee hour any day. Naked men! A busy summer social season is upon us. Pride festivities, Peacock in the Park, Pride film series ("Boys to Men" at Cinema 21 and "My Beautiful Launderette" at The Hollywood, among other screenings), a commitment ceremony or two. And that was just June! July promises "Naked Boys Singing!", a hilarious revue featuring 16 original songs, seven gorgeous guys and no clothes. Produced by Triangle Productions at Theatre! Theatre! in SE Portland. Join the First UMC gang on Friday, July 13 for the 8 o'clock show. Reserve your tickets now by calling (503) 239-5919. Naked ambition? For those who did not get enough GLBT community activity in June and July, consider the following: In August, the First Church gang will gather for "Cosmic Bowling." (Think groovy music to go along with those psychedelic shoes.) We are also planning on seeing the indie film, "Hedwig and the Angry Inch," during the week of Aug. 3-9 at Cinema 21. And we will resume our potluck meals. Let Worldwide Pablo know if you are interested in these events (click here). Or stay tuned at this page for details. Not-so naked invitation In God's family, no one is left out. All gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered persons who are members or friends of First UMC in Portland are welcome to participate in the GLBT ministries and fellowship of First UMC. We hold regular potluck meals and many other opportunities for fellowship and connection. First United Methodist Church is a welcoming Reconciling Congregation. We worship at 10:30 on Sunday morning (traditional service) and Wednesday evening at 6:30 (informal service). We are located at 1828 SW Jefferson Street, Portland, at the Goose Hollow MAX station.
