BIOGRAPHICAL DESCRIPTION OF LAWRENCE DAWKINS
During the 60s, he was one of the co-founders of the Albina
Art Center, which was instrumental in bringing to the forefront Black art
and culture to the Portland, Oregon area.
In the middle of the 60s, Mr. Dawkins was involved in the Civil
Rights Movement as a voter registration captain, a member of the state
committee for the election of Robert Kennedy and was also a member of the
United States Marine Corp. He was decorated three times for service
in Vietnam. He received outstanding service in the 5th anti tank battalion
and for bravery in field operations.
He has taught at three levels of education: high school, community
college and university totaling 38 years. He has taught and educated more
than 4,000 students in intercultural communication alone.

He has received distinguished Teaching Awards by organizations outside Mt. Hood in 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, and in 1997 received two different awards. Additional recognition awards for outstanding contributions to the identification, development, and promotion of multicultural, multiethnic understanding in education in 1994 by the Oregon Alliance of Black School Education and Portland Association of Teachers. For the past few years he has been and he is the current President of the Oregon Speech Communication Association and has received a state recognition award at the fall 1997, 98, and 99 conference. He is the past Chair of the Oregon Diversity Institute and one of the founders of the Oregon Diversity Institute. He is currently the founder of the Metropolitan Diversity Institute.
