The Cause That Was Lost

by Jefferson Davis,
President, CSA

"The overthrow of the rights of free men and the establishment of such new relations required a complete revolution in the principle of the Government of the United States, the subversion of the States' governments, the subjugation of the people and the distruction of the fraternal union. The work has been done. Will it stand? Have the eternal principles of the Declaration of Independence been hid from our sight forever? When the cause was lost, what cause was it? Not that of the South alone, but the cause of Constitutional government, of the supremacy of law, of the natural rights of man."
