Perimeter Frame
As you can see, the frame rails were bent out to open up more usable floor space. The the cross members were bent to lower the floor. There is now approximately 10" from the top of the framerails to the top of the crossmembers. The framerails also slope down behind the rear axle. This will allow the ramp to start inside the panel so the movable portion will be shorter. The rear suspension will include air bags so the frame will lower almost to the pavement. The frame and suspension is being fabricated by Jim Taylor. Jim has been involved in drag racing for several years and he built and drives a winning 6 second AA/S blown alcohol gasser. He just (8-13-05) set his personal best for both E.T (6.91 seconds) and top speed (197.8 mph) and the Woodburn dragstrip. I am confident of his skill and workmanship. In order to assure sufficient strength and rigidity, we decided to build in a "roll bar." This provides much more safety and strength than was available with a more traditional suspension set-up. |
