Accessibility Issues
Being a C5,6 quad, I have no hand grip and limited manual dexterity. My range and strength is less than the able-bodied individual. To accomodate my functional limitations, I will need to used quite sophisticated hand controls. In the past, I have used vacuum assisted and electronic assisted hand controls for the gas and brake. I have not decided which to use in my panel. Price and aesthetics will be deciding factors in my choice of type and brand.
My present '99 van, has a console that controls most of the vehicles systems, such as ignition, gear selection, hvac, windows, lights, etc. While this console is very efficient and functional, it has a low cool factor. I am searching for a method to perform the same functions but with a much more custom look.
My present van also has a headrest system that controls eight functions, such as turn signals, horn, wipers, etc. Since one hand is on the hand controls and the other is on the wheel, I can not just reach over and flip a switch or turn a knob. The headrest system allows me to press a button that activates different functions while I am driving. This system is quite expensive so, again, I am looking for alternatives.
I am also looking for technologies that will assist me while I drive. An example is an add-on that will activate my windshield wipers when it senses moisture on the glass. If anyone knows of other technologies that might be beneficial, please feel free to contact me. I will be sure to check it out and post the outcome.
Another issue is the method I will use to get into my panel and behind the wheel. I have a wheelchair lift in my present van but, for the panel, I plan on using a fold-down ramp in conjunction with the lowered floor, sloping framerails and airbags. The rear doors will open/close and the ramp will fold/unfold by remote switches.
