I started roleplaying in the Star Trek universe many moons ago in the FASA Star Trek roleplaying game (which is way out of print now). The system was clunky and hard to manage...not to mention the liberties that FASA had taken with the the world of Star Trek. For the longest time, those of us who loved roleplaying and Star Trek were stuck either creating a set of rules for ourselves, adapting another rules system (GURPs was goof for this), or just getting by with another game and getting our Trek fix from the television. You can imagine how excited I was when I learned that there was a company developing a Star Trek Roleplaying game. My hat goes off to Last Unicorn Games. There are many options available to the roleplaying Star Trek fan today. There are Star Trek games everywhere you turn these days. A recent phenomenon in the development of the Play By e-Mail method of roleplaying--also known as simming--is a great venue for Star Trek. A setting where you play the part of an officer on a Federation starship, but aren't bogged down by a bunch of rules and regulations. It's a writer's dream. Allied Electronic Simulations or AES - One of the groups that has placed its umbrella over a number of Star Trek related sims. USS Atlantis - One of the sims in AES. Set in the current year of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, the sim documents the life of the crew of the Sovereign-class starship Atlantis. I write for two characters on the Atlantis: Berian Crix and Dr. Michael Sandberg. USS Galaxy - Another AES sim. This one is also set in the current year of DS9. A similar type of story as the Atlantis, but with different stories and different faces. I write for Tebrianne Bancroft on the Galaxy. USS Sovereign - You guessed it, this one is in AES as well. And, like the Atlantis and Galaxy, the setting is the same. Again, different stories and characters. The Sovy, as her crew prefers to call the ship, sports one of the finest websites in AES. It's worth a visit just to take a look at some of Tom Hyde's graphic artistry. I write for Echo Campbell on the Sovy. USS Sulu - This one is special. It is in AES, and is set in the same setting as the other three, but the Sulu is my ship. The Sulu is a newly contructed complete refit of the Excelsior-class starship. She was named after, you guessed it, Hikaru Sulu. On this sim, I write Captain Matthew T. Salinger, commanding officer and all-around nice guy (well, I like to think so anyway). The Tebrianne Bancroft Archive - Tebrianne Bancroft (she's the one on the Galaxy, in case your score card isn't up to date) is my favorite character. I think part of the reason is because I feel like the character is more alive and vibrant than any of the other characters whose stories I tell. Last Unicorn Games - This is the Official page for the Star Trek: The Next Generation Role Playing game. They are a little slow with updating the page, but then again, find me an RPG company that isn't. Well worth a visit. The Star Trek RPG Network (TrekRPGNet) - If you are looking for information about LUG's ST:TNG RPG, then this is the site to visit. It has a lot of really nice information, including overlays, new ship classes, race templates, archives of the TrekRPG mailing list, and much more. If you visit only one Star Trek RPG page, this is the one to see. John's Star Trek RPG page - There is a lot of information here on the Last Unicorn Games' Star Trek TNG Roleplaying game. Character sheets, new overlays, conversions, etc. Navigation can feel like peeling an onion, but there is a lot of great information here. |
