It probably seems like we've been sleeping under a rock or something
but we've actually been very busy with Run On and individual projects: Alan
has his new CD The Evan Dando of Noise (along with a provocative and
revealing essay) out on Bruce Russell's Corpus Hermeticumlabel; Katie
received guffaws, flowers and a wink from Conan O'Brien for her work in The
Talent Family's Incident at Cobbler's Knob at Lincoln Center and Special
Pillow have their CD Ancient History out now; Sue has begun work on her
solo album for Thrill Jockey (it looks like Mssrs. Peter Walsh and Chris
Stamey will be involved as "recording consultants"); and I've been
preparing material for releases by both Timber and Les Batteries (details
to come).
The Run On world has most certainly not been neglected: We've got a
bunch of new songs and we've been playing pretty regularly on the East
Coast since we got back from the last tour, many cool shows with the likes
of Come, Half Japanese, Royal Trux, Yo La Tengo and Barbara Manning, Archer
Prewitt, The Nihilist Spasm Band and Borbetomagus. The What's Up Matador?
compilations are out, featuring some ancient Run On history: the CD/LP has
the original version of "Days Away" from the AJAX records 7" (this was
re-vamped and re-recorded on No Way) and the video for "Xmas Trip" directed
by Mark Steiner shows up in the "infomercial" put together by Clay Tarver.
In the midst of all of this activity, we had just enough time to get down
to the important business of recording! And we have records coming out,
below are details:
Scoot (this EP, with sleeve designed by Randy Costanza and hand-printed by
Third Termite in Pittsburgh, will be released by Sonic Bubblegum of
Brighton, MA in Sept.)
4 songs:
- "Complainer(s)" - an older song in a new arrangement (Sue's forced
return to her conga playing roots)
- "Hit Run" - cooked up at home on our medium-tech (ca. 1981) recording
setup and showing the influence of Rob Weisberg's "pentatonic inspirations"
- "Renee Away" - real new song/real pro recording
- "Copper Kettle" - another homemade one, a version of a traditional
song (we know Bob Dylan's version, Georgia Hubley tells us she sang it "at
camp")
Sit Down
(this EP will be released by Matador Europe in Nov., Sue did the
cover which features the pigeons squatting our window ledge)
5 songs:
- "Owe You" - another new song we'll be featuring on our upcoming
tours...
- "Go There (version)" - pretty long and wild remix of a song from Start
Packing done by our new friend Warren Defever of His Name Is Alive,
"dedicated to all the animals in nature 1997"
- "Xmas Trip (1997)" - though we did this in a studio, it's "live" - the
way we've been doing it on the radio and at record stores over the course
of the last year
- "Double Gemini" - 'nother new one, featuring our "fifth Run On": an
Atari ST running Dr. T's Tiger Cub
- "Half of Half (version)" - executed by Thee Almighty Designer (Casey
Rice) at Classicxs 1997; original version appears on No Way (Matador, 1997)
the whole of which was engineered by Mr. Rice
We're starting off across the country again in September, doing a
bunch of shows with Barbara Manning, some with Low and some with Ida,
spending about 4 weeks total on the road. Apologies in advance if we skip
your particular neck of the woods on this trip but we've only got so much
time to play hooky from work (please feel free to send us suggestions about
other places we could play, especially if you know who we should
contact...). In November we are accepting Yo La Tengo's generous
invitation to join them on their 39th (?) European tour. Although we did a
couple of shows in spring '96, this will be our first full-fledged
Euro-tour and we are very much looking forward to it. If we don't forget
to take the camera, we'll try to post some snapshots here... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
