Dear friends, friends of friends, total strangers:

Everyone in the world is connected by only six degrees of separation. So, potentially the whole email universe could see this Premier Issue of SageBush Cooking - the hwy50zen.com newsletter.

Indiscriminate FORWARDing of this email would further the effort. Then my best pal from 1st grade who I haven't seen in 40 odd years would get a copy of SB Cooking. "Forward Message" and everybody would be included!

<> ORIYOKI <>

- According to Susan Ichi Su Moon.

Set of three nesting bowls and utensils used for formal meals in the zendo.

The word is a contraction of Oreo cookie, because in strict traditional practice, the first bowl was used for the top wafer, the second bowl for the bottom wafer, and the third bowl for the cream filling.

Unfortunately, Susan's book The Life and Letters of Tofu Roshi is out of print. You can look for used copy . . .

<> BLACKENED ENTREE <>

- What did you do during the war Roshi?

In this carefully documented study, Brian Victoria discloses the incredible intellectual dishonesty of Japanese Buddhists who perverted their religion to a jingoistic doctrine of support of the emperor and imperial expansion during the period 1868-1945. Good job! We must face this dark side of our heritage squarely.

Robert Aitken, Roshi, Honolulu Diamond Sangha

Brian Victoria is a Soto Zen priest and teaches in the in the Department of Asian Languages and Literatures at the University of Auckland, New Zealand.

a well nobody dug
filled with no water
ripples
and a shapeless weightless man drinks

2
my monk friend has a weird endearing habit
he weaves sandals and leaves them secretly by the roadside

3
that stone Buddha deserves all the birdshit it gets
I wave my skinny arms like a tall flower in the wind

6
don't hesitate get laid
that's wisdom
sitting around chanting
what crap

7

look in the mirror
